Chapter Sketch of A Letter To The God


This story recounts the hard life and a extreme faith in God of a poor farmer named (Lencho) lived in mountain of the city who has lost his crop due to heavy rainfall and hailstones. Him total Crop was the only source of income to fulfil his family’s needs and desires. He is a firmly believers of a God , he think that God will help him in such a difficult situation and would not let him alone and his family die due to hunger and Starvation. He decided to writes a letter to the God to seek help. He lencho letter was found to Some kind good employees of the post office who decided to helped him. So, this story tells us to have faith in God and never lose hope in difficult and adverse situations. And Always do hard work no problem what is happening. 
 

About the Characters In A Letter to God

 
Lencho – Lencho was a name of Farmer . He is a poor farmer who lives on the crest of a low hill if the town with his family. He was a blind and deepest believer of God. He is innocent, hopeful, caring and responsible.
 
Postmaster – The  Post master is the employees of post office, Which is A fat, amiable fellow who helped Lencho to retain his faith in God. He gave a part of his salary in the charity for Lencho on behalf of God without telling him name.
 
Post Office Employees – People who helped Lencho in adverse situation on postmaster’s call. They first laughed at Lencho when they saw the letter they totally shocked  and helped him in his need. Lencho called them “a bunch of crooks”.

A Letter to God by G.L Fuentes Class 10

The story “A Letter to God” Is written by G.L. Fuentes depicts unwavering faith of a farmer in God. It begins with a farmer, who’s named is Lencho expecting for a good rain shower to nourish his field of corn. He is very confident about his harvest that this will going to yield him huge profits just like it does every year. To his utmost excitement, rainfall did happen and Lencho compared rain fall with 5 and 10 cent coins but sooner, this rainfall turned into a hailstorm which destroyed his whole crop field. The damage by hailstorm posed a threat to the family’s survival as their entire livelihood was dependent on the year’s produce. Although disheartened, the family had robust belief in the almighty.

 

Lencho, despite having worked day and night at the field, also knew how to write and thus, he decided to write a letter to God explaining his adverse situation and asking for help of money. He went to town to post his letter addressed “To God”. This  letter is being noticed by the fellow postmaster, at first amused him, but then motivated him want to do something for the farmer which facing difficulty so as to keep his immense belief in God . He contributes money from his salary and collects money from his colleagues and friends at post office who willingly contributed for an act of charity. To his dismay, he could only collect 70 pesos which he wrapped in an envelope to make it seem like a reply from the deity

 

On having found the letter, the writer (Lencho) is not at all shocked, because he is innocent and a blind believer of God but instead, he gets angry on finding that the amount is less than what he had expected to get. He again writes a letter to God conveying his disappointment and distrust in the employees of the post office who he thought had stolen the remaining amount of 30 pesos . Although, his wishes get fulfilled partially, if not completely, he is ungrateful in the end and questions the honesty and modesty of the post-masters who actually helped him with money (anonymously) in the name of god. He Called the post office employees ” A brunch of crooks “.

Q. What was Leneho’s pride and possession?  


Ans. Lencho lived in the solitary house on the crest of a low hill in the valley. From here, he could survey and see the river, valley and his pride, the field of ripe corn dotted with flowers. These crops always promised a good harvest. 

Their only wish was a downpour or good rain and Lencho, who knew his fields intimately, predicted rain. His prediction turned true when it started raining during dinner. He went out to feel the rain and surveyed with satisfaction, his crop draped in a curtain of rain. He regarded rain drops as a new silver coins. Hence it is the lencho pride and possession. 

 

Q1. What were Lencho’s feelings when the hail stopped?  


Ans. When the hail stopped, Lencho’s soul was filled with sadness. He was very much troubled. His com was totally destroyed. He said, “The hail has left nothing. This year we will have no com. We will all go hungry”. 

 


Q2. Why did the postmaster send a reply to Lencho’s first letter addressed to God?  


Ans. The postmaster was a generous and amiable man. He was impressed by Lencho’s firm faith in God. To sustain that faith, the postmaster sent a reply to Lencho.

Ans.: Lencho was a poor farmer who totally depended on the harvest to survive and fulfil basic needs of his family. Once his crops were destroyed due to heavy rainfall and hailstones and he was afraid to think how his family would survive. He believed that God would help him in this plight. He had firm faith in God; he believed that God would not let him be hungry. Now-a-days faith in God like Lencho is almost impossible and unseen. People are very much aware that nobody is willing to help others without any self interest. Lencho’s reaction towards post office employees was not right or justified but it was just because of his innocence as he could not believe that God had done such a mistake. They were only the post office employees who had stolen money according to him. 

 


Q5. Lencho seemed to be an impulsive man who felt suddenly elated at the rainfall and later became sad to see the destruction which the rain had caused. Did he lack of tolerance? Did he not have the courage to face the challenges of life? Elucidate it discussing the values one must possess to face any type of situation.  


Ans. Lencho was a hardworking farmer. He had grown corn in his field and was anxiously hoping for a good rain. He was very happy to see the rain but he became despair on seeing the destroyed crop in his field by the storm. No doubt he had tolerance and the courage to face the challenges in his life. He had a very firm faith in God and after the destruction of his field he was still hopeful that everything will be alright. Although Lencho was a very strong man and working hard in his fields, but his firm faith in God made him write a letter to God. And the tolerance in him only kept him waiting for the reply. He asked for hundred pesos from the God and was confident of receiving the amount. He accepted seventy pesos and again faced the situation by writing a second letter, demanding for the rest of the thirty pesos. His faith in God was not shaken, he tackled the situation bravely. In the same way we should face all situations courageously. We should be tolerant and never lose faith in God.

Ans. The desire for the freedom of his people totally animated Nelson Mandela’s life. He was transformed from a frightened young man to a bold one. The desire turned a law abiding attorney to a criminal. A family- loving husband was turned into a man without a home, changed a life-loving man into a monk. Mandela was no more virtuous as self sacrificing, but he could not even enjoy poor and limited freedom. He felt himself robbed when he came to know that his people were not free. He felt that the slavery of his people was slavery of his own. 

 


Q3 .What unintended effects were produced by decades of oppression?  


Ans. The decades of oppression made Nelson Mandela a strong person. He set out a goal to liberate the people of South Africa from continuing the bondage of poverty deprivation suffering and other discrimination. He decided to have freedom and justice for all. 

 


Q4. Describe the effect of the policy of apartheid on the people of South Africa.  


Ans.: The policy of apartheid could not be considered fortunate for the people of South Africa. It created distance and a deep wound in the country and the people. Many great men like Oliver Tamboo, Walter Sisulu, Yusuf Dadoo, Bram Fischer, etc were produced due to the brutality and oppression. They were men of great character. 

 


Q5. Describe the views of Mandela for the black people who fought and sacrificed their lives for the country’s political independence.  


Ans.: Mandela always said that the political freedom was the result of sacrifices of thousands of the black people who fought for that. He said that it could not be repaid. He thought himself as the sum of all of those African patriots. He regretted that he could not thank them. He cursed the policy of apartheid that wounded the people of his country, which would take centuries to heal. 

He also said that the oppression and brutality of the white people produced great freedom fighters like Oliver Tamboo, Walter Sisulu, Luthuli, Dadoo, Fischer, Sobukwe and many more. They were the men of courage, wisdom and large heartedness. They really suffered a lot for the political freedom of the country.
